SSH Basic Installation: Remote

  • On Ubuntu or Debian, apt-get install openssh-server

  • On other systems it may be included with the client in a package called openssh or it may be called openssh-server, or similiar. For example, on Fedora Core it is called openssh-server, so you can yum-install openssh-server.

  • The server will now be listening on Port 22 for connection, and you can login with a username and password the remote (target) machine. This is not recommended for a machine open to an untrusted network, such as the internet, because of the frequent weakness of user passwords and the fact that brute force attacks on ssh servers setup this way are common.
